Walkerton Clean Water Centre Collaboration Ensures Hamilton Township has the Cleanest Drinking Water

Partnering with the US Environmental Protection Agency, WCWC will investigate the removal of naturally occurring ammonia in the Township of Hamilton’s drinking water source

Baltimore, ON — MPP David Piccini joined the Walkerton Clean Water Centre (WCWC) to see how their pilot program is going to investigate the performance of biological filtration to remove the naturally occurring ammonia from its ground water source in the Township of Hamilton.
To conduct the pilot test, WCWC has partnered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), which has previous experience conducting similar studies. Under the partnership, USEPA generously provided its patented pilot system to WCWC, trained its technical staff, and offered continued support with knowledge sharing.
The experimental phase of the project will start in January 2024 and continue for one year, during which the pilot will be jointly operated by the Township of Hamilton water operators and WCWC staff. It is expected that this study will result in a sustainable treatment option that may reduce both chemical use and drinking water distribution systems maintenance.
“The Walkerton Clean Water Centre’s collaboration with the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Township of Hamilton is an exciting opportunity for new developments and innovation to ensure rural communities have the best, clean drinking water” said MPP David Piccini. “I am thankful that this partnership is benefiting a local municipality and promoting good paying jobs in the industry”
WCWC has been supporting municipal and First Nations water systems across Ontario with its pilot testing program. This program aims to address information gaps regarding the treatment, technology and operational requirements necessary to help ensure that the drinking water is safe. Pilot tests may be undertaken in response to client inquiries or identified gaps, with a focus on issues faced by small and First Nations water systems.
“This is an exciting opportunity for WCWC to collaborate and share information with the US Environmental Protection Agency, while helping the Township of Hamilton trial this innovative, cost-effective, treatment process. We are proud to deliver pilot testing services across Ontario to help communities effectively treat challenging water sources and ensure clean, safe drinking water” said CEO, Walkerton Clean Water Centre Brian Bates
These practical studies provide clients with information specific to their source water, which they can use to further engage with professional engineering firms and consultants to address their concerns. Pilot testing results are also used to improve existing training, contribute to new courses, and are shared through conference proceedings, articles in relevant publications and fact sheets to ensure the operators and decision-makers overseeing water systems can readily access the information.
