Ontario’s $34,978,397 investment will build homes and support economic growth

Brighton, ON – On Friday, MPP David Piccini joined Mayor Brian Ostrander and members of council in Brighton for the official groundbreaking ceremony of the new wastewater treatment system. This project is supported by the Government of Ontario through a $34,978,397 investment through the second intake of the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (MHIP-HEWSF).

“Today’s groundbreaking marks a major milestone for Brighton and Ontario”, said David Piccini MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South, “Our government’s investment will create good local jobs and build new homes, demonstrating our commitment to infrastructure that drives growth and opportunity across rural Ontario.”

Construction is officially underway to replace the lagoon-based wastewater treatment system with a brand-new mechanical sewage treatment system. This new plant will lower the environmental impact of sewage treatment and improve the services provided to residents. This project will protect the community while unlocking housing opportunities and economic growth to support a growing population.

“Our government is investing in local infrastructure to build and protect Ontario, strengthen the economy and create more jobs. The new Wastewater Treatment System in the Municipality of Brighton is part of our government’s nearly $4 billion investment in critical infrastructure that will make new housing possible, including approximately 3,000 new homes in Brighton,” said Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s Acting Minister of Infrastructure.

“Today marks a major milestone for Brighton. With the support of our provincial partners and their $35 million investment, we’re building the infrastructure that will power our growth for the next 25 years and beyond,” said Mayor Brian Ostrander. “This new Wastewater Pollution Control Plant will not only enable us to build the homes our community needs-it also resolves longstanding ammonia concerns, protecting our environment and ensuring a cleaner future for all.”

The Municipality of Brighton’s project is one of many to receive provincial funding in the second intake through the MHIP-HEWSF. The province is investing $4 billion to help build the necessary infrastructure, like roads and water systems, that support new housing construction. The Municipality of Brighton was successful in the second round of funding to support their growing population, local businesses and new homes in its expansion of critical infrastructure.

As part of the Ontario government’s plan to Protect Ontario, we continue to make historic investments to local infrastructure to build more homes. In total, nearly $1.7 billion through the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund to support municipalities across Ontario build 700,000 new homes.
